TSMC to Help Chinese Handset IC Design Companies
August 26, 2005
TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing) plans to take part in the investment in a handset IC design company through venture capital companies. It is said the former vice president of TSMC, Genda Hu, will serve as the CEO of the IC design company jointly established by China's home-appliance maker TCL and the venture capital funds. TSMC expressed their intention to help China's IC design industry with design services and the investment through venture capital companies, but in light of Taiwanese governmental policies, has denied direct investment in any Chinese IC design company. According to TSMC, their aim is to enhance the local self-sufficiency of China's semiconductor industry and increase the demand of the China market so as to complement TSMC's manufacturing competence.
